Rivers died in September following complications from vocal cord surgery.

While some argued online that Rivers wasn’t an actress and would be more appropriately honored during an awards show like the Emmys, many others disagreed.

Even Gawker noted, “Joan Rivers was the Oscars. Her pre-show and post-show was instrumental in making the entire charade the big-ass hullabaloo it is today.”

For the moment, the reason for the oversight is unknown.
