Haifa University is introducing a new international project: A master’s degree program in Holocaust studies.

The unique program will be launched on October 2012. It will be the first time an Israeli academic institution introduces such a program, which aims to deal with the alarming drop in the number of young students specializing in the Holocaust in Israel and that fact that senior researchers are slowly retiring.

The study program is intended for students from all over the world, lectures will be delivered in English.

The program will be led by Prof. Arieh Kochavi, director of the Strochlitz Institute of Holocaust Studies at Haifa University.

Students will be offered courses in the history of the Holocaust period, social psychology and anthropological explorations on trauma. They will study Holocaust literature and deal with genocide and international law issues.

As part of the program, students will be required to study German and will be able to choose another relevant language like Polish.

The program’s coordinator, Dr. Yael Granot-Bein, says several Israeli students, two students from Berlin and Boston and a young Chinese woman living in Israel have already signed up for the program.
