JUSTICE
University of Texas at Austin:
“New report reveals the devastating toll of COVID-19 in Texas prisons and jails / … 80% of people who died from COVID-19 in county jails in Texas were pretrial and not convicted of a crime.”
HEALTH
Nutrition Facts / Dr. Michael Greger:
“A significant percentage of hospitals surveyed had fast food restaurants inside them, with Krispy Kreme topping the list. Brilliant marketing, given that families surveyed in hospitals with McDonald’s were twice as likely to think McDonald’s was healthy—after all, they let it in a hospital.”

THE SCO ON CLIMATE JUSTICE
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Council of Heads of State Meeting:
“We must pool our efforts to fight the threat posed by climate change. In all our efforts, the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities [emphasis added] remains paramount.”

THE UN ON CLIMATE JUSTICE (1)
UN Secretary-General António Guterres, to the annual ministerial meeting of the Group of 77 developing countries and China:
“There is a duty on all to take climate action, under the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities [emphasis added] …. We need to dramatically scale up public finance from developed countries …. And we need to improve access to funding, particularly for least developed countries and small island developing States. These countries contributed least to global warming ….”

IN A NUTSHELL
NOAA-NCEI / “Assessing the Global Climate in October 2020”:
“Europe had its warmest October on record …. The October average Arctic sea ice extent was the smallest for October on record … surpassed the previous low record that was set only last year (2019) by 173,700 square miles. … The Northern Hemisphere January-October land and ocean surface temperature was the warmest such period since global records began in 1880 … Record warm January-October temperature departures were widespread across northern and southeastern Asia and across parts of Central and South America, Europe, the Indian, Atlantic and the western and northern Pacific oceans. …”

THE UN ON CLIMATE JUSTICE (2)
UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Report of the Joint Meeting of the 129th Session of the Programme / Paragraph 8, footnote for line u):
“We reaffirm all the principles of the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development, including, inter alia, the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities [emphasis added], as set out in principle 7 thereof.”
Principle 7 of the 1992 Rio Declaration on Environment and Development reads as follows:
“States shall cooperate in a spirit of global partnership to conserve, protect and restore the health and integrity of the Earth’s ecosystem. In view of the different contributions to global environmental degradation, States have common but differentiated responsibilities [emphasis added]. The developed countries acknowledge the responsibility that they bear in the international pursuit of sustainable development in view of the pressures their societies place on the global environment and of the technologies and financial resources they command.”

THE THOMAN REPORT
Rick Thoman, climate specialist at University of Alaska Fairbanks:
“The beat goes on: at Utqiaġvik, every single day since Sept 9th has had an average temperature above the 1981-2010 normal. Why? Lack of sea ice in the Chukchi Sea south of 73N [73 degrees north of the Equator].”
