In May 2013 the Samaras government fired 600 women working in the cleaning services of the Ministry of Finance. They responded by camping outside the Ministry’s building, near Syntagma Square, turning it into a topos of struggle, solidarity and resistance.
Yesterday, Wednesday 28 January, when Yanis Varoufakis and Nadia Valavani came to take up their duties as new Ministers of Finance, the laid-off women were still there like any other day. Upon hearing the news that their -unconstitutional- discharge is cancelled, they cried. But this time they didn’t cry because of pain, sorrow or teargas, as it had been the case in the previous 18 months.
These tears were tears of joy.
