In Letters To Finkelstein What We Can Do

Artists Building Communities was founded by a group of low income, out of work artists when the pandemic began. They crowdfunded and built emergency tiny homes for their unhoused neighbors in Oakland. They have built seven homes since the pandemic began. Last December they teamed up with the residents of Wood Street, Essential Food and Medicine and Living Earth Structures to construct a Resiliency Hub in one of the largest encampments in the nation. Cob on Wood is the sustainable building arm of Artists Building Communities. They mobilized the volunteers, helped fundraise the resources, hired and empowered residents and now even host a weekly open mic starring the plethora of talented unhoused musicians that live at the camp. With a community kitchen, a health clinic, free store, pizza oven, fire pit completed and a workshop in the works, members of Artist Building Communities are honored to work alongside the people who live here and will continue building so long as their fundraising allows.
