Hi Norman,
The troika (Germany, IMF etc) have been trying to solve the problem of the Greek leftist government – and set up an example for other countries that may be tempted to follow the example.
They have been squeezing the country very hard so that the government will either fall or cave in and sign the same harsh austerity measures as the previous corrupt governments and get totally discredited.
They pushed too hard, and ultimately Tsipras decided that he could not give in any more (even though he was quite cooperative all along trying to find common ground).
We’ll see what happens in the plebiscite now.
People are sick of the situation over the last 5 years, the treatment of the troika and the fact that there is no end in sight, but on the other hand, most want to stay also in the euro and are afraid of what will happen next.
So it’s all up in the air as to what the result of the plebiscite will be.
I am in Greece now till
next Tuesday, will just get the chance to vote.
Best,
M
