Subject: Fwd: [AAANChicago] UPDATE–Sit-in to protest DePaul denial of tenure for Professor Norman Finkelstein and Professor Mehrene Larudee
    Date: Mon, 11 Jun 2007 13:35:37 -0700 (PDT)

A dozen DePaul students, organized as Students for
Justice for Finkelstein, are on the 22nd floor of the
CNA building at Jackson and Wabash, sitting in the
office of university President Holtschneider. The
sit-in started this morning after a statement was
posted on the students’ Facebook page, saying,
“Professor Norman Finkelstein as well as Professor
Mehrene Larudee have been denied tenure. It is clear
that this decision was politically motivated.”

The DePaul students will meet with Holtschneider at
3:00 pm today. They are asking for support in this
struggle for academic freedom. Students for Social
Justice at UIC and others in solidarity with the
sit-in will vigil outside the building starting at
    3:00 pm.

Support is coming from students and others around
the country and around the world. Students from 14
colleges and universities at the Midwest Regional
meeting of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS)
held June 9th and 10th at UIC, made this statement:

“SDS Midwest Regional meeting condemns DePaul
University President Holtschneider for denying tenure
    for Dr. Norman Finkelstein.

Finkelstein is a popular professor at DePaul whose
tenure bid was opposed by Zionists because of his
criticisms of Israel’s occupation of Palestine. Dr.
Finkelstein exceeds DePaul’s expectations for tenure.

The U.S relies on its ally, Israel, in the
imperialist agenda in the Middle East – maintaining
strategic control of oil. Not just the oil
corporations and the U.S. government, but academic
institutions like DePaul University, march in
lockstep. Any voice that is raised critical of Israel
or sympathetic to the plight of the Palestinians is
    struck down and marginalized.

We call on DePaul to reverse this decision. Tenure
    for Dr. Norman Finkelstein.”
