I recently came across a surprisingly excellent film titled “Red Joan” (you can find it on Netflix). It’s about a female physicist at the end of World War 2 who smuggles atomic bomb secrets to the Soviet Union. I dreaded watching the film because I figured it would be just more anti-Communist propaganda. Was I ever surprised! I don’t want to give away the story line so I’ll just say that one take-away from the film is that a legal verdict is not necessarily the last word. It often must also be situated in a historical context. That’s as true of “treason” during WW2 as Russia’s “aggression” against Ukraine today. The film received largely negative reviews. That didn’t surprise me.
