Limerick Corner:  There was a Chief Rabbi Called Mirvis

My limerick about the Chief Rabbi, posted to #Jews4Labour

I once won second prize in a national limerick competition organised jointly by the London Evening Standard, the National Poetry Society and British Telecom (I think it was about the year 2000).  The first two lines were already provided (by the British poet Jo Shapcott) and the contest was to complete the limerick, with reference to modern telecommunications, in particular mobile phones. The two lines were:

There was a young ladette with attitude

Who hailed from a faraway latitude.

I thought of a continuation immediately:

With sticks and with stones,

She smashed mobile phones

And thereby earned everyone’s gratitude.

I didn’t think my limerick would get anywhere, as it was so negative, but I thought it might at least make them laugh.  So I sent it off, as a joke, and then forgot all about it.  To my surprise, a few weeks later someone rang me up to say I had won second prize!  The first prize was a cellphone, which I didn’t want; but the second prize was a lovely book of modern poetry.
