Dear Friends,

I am pleased to inform you that registration is open for the week of United Nations Holocaust  Remembrance events  that will be held in New York in January 2017.  Our theme this year is “Holocaust Remembrance: Educating for a Better Future”.  We invite you to register online as soon as you can to the Holocaust Memorial Ceremony, our main event, that will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the United Nations General Assembly Hall on 27 January 2017.  If you receive a hard copy of this message, please visit http://bit.ly/UNHOP2017 <http://bit.ly/UNHOP2017> to register online.

Many of you may be familiar with the wonderful exhibition curated by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, titled State of Deception, the Power of Nazi Propaganda, which will be on display in the United Nations Visitors Lobby from 13 January through March 2017. I am pleased to inform you that we have also worked closely with the Museum to produce a series of 16 posters based on the exhibit, that have been translated into the official languages of the United Nations – Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish, as well as Dutch and Kiswahili, for distribution to the global network of United Nations Information Centres. In addition, we have provided these offices with talking points and a detailed lesson plan for use with local students.

This exhibition topic is very timely as propaganda continues to have a negative impact today by spreading misinformation and untruths that negatively affects behaviour and beliefs. Thus, we have organised a briefing for NGOs on Holocaust Remembrance: Educating against Extremism, Building a better Future to examine how best to deal with this and provide NGOs an opportunity to share their ideas with us. This briefing will be held by the Holocaust and the Untied Nations Outreach Programme in partnership with the Department of Public Information’s NGO Relations Unit  from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on 26 January 2017.

We are also very excited to be partnering for the first time with the Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations and the Permanent Mission of Lithuania to the United Nations on the screening of the film Persona Non Grata, which chronicles the story of Chiune Sugihara, a Japanese diplomat who was honoured as one of the Righteous among the Nations. The event will be held from  6:30 p.m.- 9:15 p.m. on 25 January 2017/

Please consult the full calendar  of Holocaust events that will be held during the week.  We look forward to welcoming you to the United Nations in New York.

Wishing you and your families a joyous holiday season !

Warm regards,
