"Obviously the demonstrators at the Gaza fence weren’t threatening anyone’s life. A massacre certaintly took place. There was undoubtedly no justification to shoot thousands of people, kill scores of them and turn hundreds into cripples. But this contradicts the basic fact that the IDF is a moral army. So Israel must turn tens of thousands of demonstrators into terrorists with bombs in their pockets, portray their possible entrance into Israel as an existential threat and use the kites they flew as justification for soldiers to execute them."

[But Gazans have no real security interests at stake, even as Israel unleashed eight massacres against Gaza in the past 14 years] Hamas has an arsenal of rockets and missiles [and poor Israel is defenseless against these enhanced fireworks], as well as sophisticated tunnels that threaten Israeli civilians [although even Israel acknowledges that militants in the tunnels never targeted Israeli civilians]. Likewise, we must remember that Hamas is exploiting the desperation of their own people in an attempt to inject violence into the border demonstrations." [Even if Hamas has exhorted Gazans not to engage in violence] But Ellison's practical proposals sound right.
