NGF's letter to the editors of American Enterprise magazine
Editor's note: Finkelstein's letter to the editors below the article.
The American Enterprise, 03.02.2006:
"DePaul University political science professor Norman Finkelstein may be an odd bird—his parents are Holocaust survivors but he questions whether the Nazis really killed six million Jews. And celebrity academic Noam Chomsky may seem like he hates America.
But Horowitz doesn’t mention anything these men have done inside their classrooms. Surely a dangerous professor is one who endangers his students.
There may be an argument that men with dangerous views outside the classroom should be carefully examined before being allowed inside it. But Horowitz hasn’t made it."
Kelly Jane Torrance writes that I "question whether the Nazis really killed six million Jews" ("Rise of the Tenured Radicals"). In all my writings and public statements I quote the figure provided by dean of Nazi holocaust historians Raul Hilberg in his classic 3-volume study Destruction of the European Jews that the Nazis killed 5.1. million Jews. It seems that Torrance's quarrel is with him not me. What I've done is defend the findings of standard scholarship against the Holocaust industry. The Nazis systematically exterminated the Jews assembly-line style. Few survived. Yet, in order to justify huge compensation demands for "needy Holocaust victims" the Holocaust industry fantastically inflated the number of Holocaust survivors, thereby fantastically diminishing the number of victims. It's a point apparently lost on Torrance that those libeling me as a Holocaust denier are in fact the actual Holocaust deniers.
